ParaView 5.10.1 remote rendering with opacity is broken, at least with 2D surfaces

I am using 5.10.1 locally on MacOS 10.14.6 and connecting to a remote server at LANL. Opacity mapping to surfaces is not working for remote rendering. This can be reproduced with a wavelet resampled to 2D image data.
I can recreate the surface disappearing as described in #18030 (closed), as well as a crash. I could reproduce when connecting to a 1 Node 36 rank job and not with a 1 node 1 rank job, so it looks related to the parallel jobs specifically
Steps to reproduce:
- Connect to remote pvserver
- Wavelet source with default options
- Resample to Image
- Uncheck
Use Input Bounds
- Set Z-bounds to (0,0)
- Set Sampling Dimensions to (100,100,1)
- Should be showing RTData in slice representation after Apply
- Open ColorMap editor panel
- Check
Enable Opacity Mapping for Surfaces
(works fine), Uncheck - Set remote render threshold to 0
- Check
Enable Opacity Mapping for Surfaces
(data disappears) - Hit zoom to data (crashes)
