vtkOpenGLPolyDataMapper (OpenGL2, VTK 6.3): invisible edges when colouring surface by scalar

When displaying a surface, coloured by scalars, enabling edge visibility on the actor's property has no visible effect.
In contrast, if the surface is coloured by a constant colour from the actor's property, the edges are visible as they used to be with the old opengl backend.
My conjecture is that the edges are coloured by the scalars just like the surface, which would explain their invisibility.
I tried to solve the problem by inserting !this->DrawingEdges conditions in places, but it failed to make a difference.
