Minor typesetting fixes in sections 3.5 to 3.8

This is a very small series of changes. I mainly want to test the waters and see if merge requests are still being considered in this repository. If so then I might collect a larger batch of fixes for another merge request.

I am reading through parts of the text and I figured I might as well fix typos along the way.

Typesetting fixes:

  • Hyphens being spaced as minus signs
  • Spurious symbols and subscript grouping errors
  • Symbols not being in math mode

Also fixed minor phrasing in a garbled paragraph.
