ParaView 5.6 fails to start in Windows "remote desktop connection" sessions

We've had issues starting ParaView when remoting into our workstations using Windows' built-in remote desktop connection. We believe the last version of ParaView that was able to be opened while remoting in was version 5.2.0 (i.e. I've verified that I can boot and use v5.2.0 as expected). If we leave a ParaView session open and then remote in, that session will continue to function as expected. I expect this may have something to do with video-card hardware being disabled, for example attempting to open the nVidia Control Panel while remote results in this error:

I've looked around for answers to this video card issue, such as this Microsoft support question, but that's only a potential solution for Windows 10. As listed below, the host systems are Windows 7 which don't have the option to enable Use the hardware default graphics adapter for all Remote Desktop Services sessions

Information for host workstation:

  • OS: Windows 7 Enterprise SP 1
  • Video Card: NVIDIA Quadro M5000
