plug a bad memory leak with value indexed materials

David E. DeMarle requested to merge demarle/vtk:plug-an-valueindexed-material-memleak into master

This reduces the leaks to background noise levels. We should avoid rebuilding the materials at the point of the todo comment as that will be faster and better. A quick attempt introduced crashes, so it is left as a todo.
