This bug is hidden by turning FXAA off (Edit/ Settings/ Render View/ Enable FXAA).
I cannot replicate this on my workstation.
My user has replicated. He is willing to help Kitware. If desired, ask me for his name. (Note to self - John Big.) Here is what he gave me:
Windows 10, Kitware binaries (after I added default-servers.pvsm), 5.4.0, remote server. Upon startup, there is a black rectangle in the lower left of the screen. My user loaded a multi file dataset. All of the screen then goes black. Repeatable. Removing configuration files did not resolve it.
Adding a picture of his screen.

Ken Martin (at Kitware) has also replicated. I believe this is the same issue. Here is Ken's comments:
I have seen this with ParaView 5.4 on one of my 3-4 year old laptops. I have to turn off the nvidia chip so I am using the Intel GPU to see the issue. For me it impacts all rendering, not just volumes as some have reported. As soon as I startup PV 5.4 I get the black box in the corner where the axis actor is positioned.5.4.1Cory Quammencory.quammen@kitware.comCory Quammencory.quammen@kitware.comhttps://gitlab.kitware.com/paraview/paraview/-/issues/17521black screen and/or rectangle master bug2019-04-23T17:32:15-04:00W. Also, should we call "preferences" to "settings" on non-mac systems?
It's a new feature; renaming gets harder after the release, hence it is worthwhile to make sure we are happy with the name. I should have brought this up during the review.

The two issues are that the second quarter clip is not inverted, and the Show Plane is not turned off.
* In the pipeline browser, select Clip3. Invert clip.
* Unselect Show Plane.
Since this is new functionality, I would like to get it fixed correctly if possible for the release.

I suspect it is due to the **Clip** filter replacement of the **Inside/out** property with **Invert** not being handled correctly when loading the example visualization state files. Toggling the **Invert** property in the example visualizations make them match the thumbnails.
