Filter selection dialog

Sometimes finding the right filter is a major hassle, even for "expert" users that know the filter exists. It would be really handy if there was an easier way of finding and selecting sources and filters.
One idea is to have a dialog box that provides lists of widgets. By default, the list would show the most recently created sources/filters. It could also have a chooser box to select a different categorization of sources and filters. It could also have a text entry box so that users could match text to the filter descriptions and help files to find matching filters.
It would also be nice if the dialog was in a dockable window so that it could be around all the time if the user desires that.
