opacity < 1 crashes pipeline

If a representation's opacity is set < 1 the vtk pipeline crashes, never returning from the in-situ call. No output is given.
For example, this python script line executes fine: DataRepresentation1.Opacity = 1.0
This line causes the pipeline to crash: DataRepresentation1.Opacity = 0.5
