@cory.quammen yeah I use material libraries every single day, please do not remove that feature
Great to hear. Thanks so much for the help with this, it is greatly appreciated.
Hey @utkarsh.ayachit, it 100% works in 5.9. I use it everyday and have used it on different machines (win, unix) and builds (custom, regular download, etc). Exact steps to reproduce in 5.9.0:
Add Sphere with Theta/Phi resolution of 60
Enable Ray Tracing
Turn Back end to “OSPRay Pathtracer”
Download Env Map Image from this weblink (must be HDR version)
Switch Path Traced Environment to image
Load “hilly_terrian_01_8k.hdr” under Path Traced Environment image
Change Sphere1 Ray Tracing material to “Metal_Aluminum_mirror” (Advanced property)
Your image should look like this. This is the pure “Environment” mode that uses the env map for both the background and the lighting.
Finally, change the “background mode” to “Both”. Your final image should look like the one below. This is the mode that uses the env map for the lighting and a static backplate or basic color for the background.
Please let me know if you have any other questions,
I am not even seeing that work. I have tested that out in the image below and the base background color "orange" is still being shown even though it should be a sky from the skybox. For both the background texture and the env map texture only colors seem to work. I cannot load a traditional hdr env map or a rectangular skybox in either.
Images loaded in "background texture" should only be used as a static background. Images that are loaded in "Path traced env" should be treated as maps that wrap around the entire scene and provide both a moveable background and lighting for the scene.
The toggle background mode controls how they interact. See the image below:
@utkarsh.ayachit can you provide some insight into this? Seems like that background stuff you did a while back has caused some issues.
@cory.quammen absolutely.
Steps to Reproduce:
• Enable ray tracing and set to OSPRay Pathtracing
• Load env map under Path Traced Environment
- Nothing happens…
- It should load the hdr map as a sphere around the scene
The only lighting I can get to work under the path traced environment is simple colors. The “use env lighting toggle” has been added under the background drop down menu, but when pressed it complete freezes my machine.
This feature took over a year to get working correctly, and was the main cost in our development contract. I would greatly appreciate it if it was fixed before the full release of 5.10
Some 5.10 updates have broken the ability the feature to use an environmental map as the lighting in OSPRay pathtracing, while using a static backplate. This was a feature that my company Corvid paid to have implemented in 5.9, so the request is to get that functionality operational again.

Hey guys, thanks for looping me in on this. @timothee.chabat I agree with all of your changes in the display area. For instance, “material” should not be shown unless OSPRay is turned on since it doesn’t do anything. Also, I am a big fan of changing the naming scheme of PBR and Gourand to Principled and OBJ since that is what they are called in the backend of the code.
Following up with what @demarle said. I am very hesitant to change anything with the Background Mode stuff. Specifically, the ability to use a hdr env map for the lighting only and a generic background for the Backplate (Env Mode: Both) is a feature my company paid to get developed and we use every day. It has a bunch of intricacies to get implemented and I fear that changing how the mode works would break this.
Personally I think that part of the GUI section is easier to understand the current way it is, but then again I use it everyday so it is what I am used to.
