Having spaces in `project()` causes unhelpful error message

The line project (project name) in CMakeLists.txt causes CMake to output the following unhelpful error message:

CMake Error: Could not find cmake module file: CMakeDeterminenameCompiler.cmake CMake Error: Error required internal CMake variable not set, cmake may be not be built correctly.

Of course, project (projectname) works -- as expected. This behavior has been observed in version 3.5.1 and in 3.9.

Is there a way we could get a more helpful error message?
